uPVC windows: the smart choice for Québec
uPVC is the rigid, unplasticized version of PVC. It is the most widely used material for residential windows in Québec — and for good reason. Unlike the standard PVC used in plumbing, uPVC is formulated to be ultra-rigid and resistant to UV and weather.
What uPVC gives you
- Superior thermal insulation. uPVC is an excellent natural insulator, cutting heat loss in winter and keeping the house cool in summer.
- Minimal maintenance. Unlike wood, it needs no painting or staining. Soapy water is enough.
- UV and yellowing resistance. Pure, non-recycled uPVC resists discoloration far better than standard or blended PVC.
- Corrosion resistance. It does not rust, does not rot and handles moisture well.
- Durability. With minimal maintenance, uPVC windows last more than 25 years.
- And hybrid, in between. A uPVC frame inside, an aluminum shell outside: the insulation of the first, the weathering of the second against sun and rain. That is what goes on a large opening or a panoramic bay, rather than an all-aluminum frame.
Careful — not all uPVC is equal
Many manufacturers use recycled or blended PVC to cut costs. The result: more porous frames, less UV resistance, faster yellowing. Ask the question when you shop — is it 100 % pure uPVC or a blend? The answer tells you a great deal about the product.
Three other things to check: profile thickness (the best exceed 5 5/8 in. in a welded frame), the type of spacer in the sealed unit (Swisspacer spacers have minimal thermal conductivity), and the Low-E technology used — Climaguard 8071, for instance, is built into the glass rather than applied to its surface.
Aluminum windows: the modern option
Aluminum is valued for its contemporary look and its strength. It is mostly found in modern and commercial construction.
What aluminum gives you
- Slim design. Frames are thinner, which maximizes the glass area.
- A wide range of colours, thanks to powder coating.
- Structural strength. You mostly see it on the large glazed surfaces of commercial buildings.
- Longevity. On par with good uPVC, with proper maintenance.
Where it falls short
- Thermal conductor: without a thermal break, aluminum conducts cold and heat.
- Higher price than uPVC.
- Prone to condensation in cold climates.
The bottom line
For most homes in Québec, uPVC windows remain the wisest choice. Their thermal performance, accessible price and low maintenance make them the best fit for our climate. Aluminum keeps its place on commercial projects and large glazed surfaces.
The single most important criterion? The quality of the uPVC itself. Demand pure, non-recycled material, thick frames and a solid warranty — that is what will make the difference in fifteen or twenty years.
